Since the beginning of the Silk Road joining the West with the East,

the Republic of Syria has been the bridge connecting different

cultures and the focal point of ancient civilization.

This intriguing Middle Eastern country located on the eastern coast of

the Mediterranean Sea  is still relatively undiscovered by mass tourism.

The capital of Damascus is considered the oldest city in the world and during the time of the

crusades this major Islamic city became famed for steel weapons that the local sword smiths

created for Saladin and his warriors. Besides magnificent ancient ruins, medieval castles,

deserts, rugged mountains, stunning natural scenery and friendly people this country

boasts of a beautiful Mediterranean coastline.

Typical Syrian cuisine includes falafels and barbeque chicken. Visitors can also choose

fast food for lunch or perhaps tea from a local European café. Alcohol and beachwear

are tolerated, but western tourists should exercise discretion in both areas to

avoid offending local sensibilities.
